Damian did not open the archive door.
His gun remained trained on Marcus Hale, while Rosie sat quietly against his chest, one tiny hand gripping the lapel of his black suit. Outside the steel door, rainwater dripped somewhere in the underground corridor.
Then Sofia spoke again.

«Damian, listen to me.»
Her voice was different from the gentle tone he remembered every morning as she poured coffee in his kitchen. It was still soft, but filled with urgency and sheer terror.
«Marcus cannot leave that room.»
Damian’s eyes never moved from his security chief. Slowly, Marcus raised both hands.
«Boss, I can explain.»
«You have ten seconds.»
«Vivienne isn’t who you think she is.»
Damian’s face remained completely expressionless. «That costs you one second.»
Marcus swallowed hard. «Her real name is Evelyn Moretti.»
The surname landed heavily inside the archive. Moretti.
Twenty-two years earlier, the Moretti organization had been the Vale family’s most violent rival. Their war left dozens dead, warehouses burned, families scattered, and Damian’s uncle found beneath a bridge with the Moretti crest carved into the table beside him.
Damian stared at Marcus. «The Morettis are gone.»
«No,» Marcus’s voice dropped to a whisper. «They hid.»
Rosie looked back and forth between the two men. «Mr. Damian?»
Damian immediately softened his tone. «Yes, princess?»
«I don’t like him.»
Marcus looked down at her. Rosie buried her face against Damian’s chest, and Damian’s eyes darkened. «Neither do I.»
Marcus took a step backward, and the guards instantly raised their weapons.
«Don’t,» Damian said quietly. Marcus froze.
Damian tilted his head toward the door. «Why would Sofia warn me not to open it?»
Marcus said nothing.
«Five seconds.»
«Because Luca isn’t alone.»
Damian’s jaw tightened. Outside, Luca spoke up. «He’s telling the truth.»
Then another male voice echoed from farther down the corridor—older, controlled, and deeply familiar.
«Open the door, son.»
Damian went completely still. Antonio Vale. His father. Dead for eight years, supposedly buried beneath a marble angel in the Vale family cemetery.
Rosie lifted her head. «That’s Grandpa Tony.»
Damian slowly looked down at her. «You know him?»
Rosie nodded. «He brings cookies.»
Something almost impossible crossed Damian’s expression. His entire family had apparently been alive the whole time he ruled an empire built around their graves.
Damian looked back at Marcus. «Start talking.»
Marcus’s composure finally cracked. «Antonio discovered someone was selling Vale family routes to the Morettis eight years ago. He staged his death to investigate without being watched.»
«And Luca?»
«Found the same network two years later.»
«So you staged his death too?»
Marcus shook his head. For the first time, genuine fear entered his voice. «No. Luca’s death was supposed to be real.»
Silence filled the room. Damian lowered Rosie gently onto a leather chair.
«Marcus.»
«Boss—»
«Look at me.» Marcus did. «Who ordered my brother killed?»
Marcus’s lips parted, but before he could answer, the archive lights abruptly shut off.
Chaos in the Dark
Rosie screamed. Damian moved instantly, sweeping her into his arms and dropping behind the stone desk as gunfire exploded through the room.
Muzzle flashes tore across the darkness. Glass shattered, and a guard fell. Someone inside the archive had fired first.
Damian covered Rosie completely with his body. «Eyes closed.»
Her little arms wrapped tightly around his neck. «I’m scared.»
«I know.»
«Is Mommy outside?»
«Yes.»
«Then Mommy will come.»
Another shot cracked, and a man screamed. Emergency lights flickered red. When the smoke cleared, Marcus was gone, and the steel archive door stood wide open.
Damian’s surviving guard staggered against the wall. «Boss—Marcus took the east tunnel.»
Damian looked into the corridor and froze.
Sofia stood there. Alive, pale, and breathing, dressed in black trousers, boots, and a dark coat soaked from the rain. For nineteen days, Damian had believed she was buried beneath six feet of earth. Now, she stood ten feet away.
Rosie immediately reached for her. «Mommy!»
Sofia’s composure collapsed entirely. «My baby.»
Damian released Rosie, who ran straight into her arms. Sofia dropped to her knees, catching her daughter so tightly they nearly fell.
Rosie laughed through her tears. «You woke up!»
Sofia kissed every inch of her face. «I told you I would.»
The Return of the Dead
Behind them stood Luca Vale—older than Damian remembered, with a deep scar running from his temple to his jaw, but unmistakably alive. Standing beside him was Antonio, silver-haired and hard-eyed, carrying the same quiet authority Damian remembered from childhood.
Three people Damian had mourned stood together in an underground hallway. Damian did not move an inch.
Then Luca looked at him. «Hello, brother.»
Damian crossed the distance and punched him straight in the face.
Luca hit the wall. Sofia gasped, and Rosie’s eyes widened, while Antonio said nothing.
Luca wiped blood from his lip. «I deserved that.»
Damian struck him again. «You let me bury you.»
Luca stumbled. «You let me start a war over your death.»
Another punch. «You let me kill men looking for revenge that never existed.»
Luca caught Damian’s wrist. «Because if the people hunting me knew you knew I survived, they would have killed you too.»
Damian stared at him. Then Antonio stepped forward. «That was my order.»
Damian slowly turned toward his father. Antonio met his gaze. «I made both of them disappear.»
Damian’s voice grew glacial. «And Sofia?»
Antonio glanced toward her. «Sofia found the truth about Vivienne.»
Damian looked at Sofia, with Rosie still wrapped securely around her. «What truth?»
Sofia reached into her coat. Damian instinctively raised his gun, but she stopped. «It’s only a phone.»
He lowered the weapon. Sofia placed the phone on the archive desk and pulled up a photograph. Vivienne stood outside a private hospital beside Marcus—and between them stood a man Damian recognized immediately: Carlo Moretti, the former Moretti heir, officially dead for twenty-one years.
Damian looked at Sofia. «What does this have to do with Rosie?»
Sofia’s eyes filled with fear. «Everything.»
She opened another file: a medical document detailing Rosie Carter’s DNA analysis. Damian looked toward Luca, whose expression shifted.
«What is that?»
Sofia whispered, «I found it in Vivienne’s apartment.»
Damian began reading. The report showed Rosie’s paternal DNA matched Luca Vale—expected, but beneath it lay another line: MATERNAL LINEAGE MATCH: MORETTI.
Damian raised his eyes. Sofia was shaking. «I was adopted.»
Antonio closed his eyes, and Luca went completely still.
Damian stared at Sofia. «You’re a Moretti.»
«I didn’t know,» Antonio answered for her. «Her biological father was Carlo Moretti.»

The Eleven-Billion-Dollar Legacy
The corridor fell silent. Finally, Damian understood.
Rosie was not simply Luca Vale’s daughter. She carried the bloodlines of two rival families—Vale and Moretti—unknowingly connecting two criminal dynasties that had spent decades trying to destroy one another.
Damian looked at Antonio. «That still doesn’t explain why Vivienne wants her.»
Antonio walked toward the archive wall and removed an old framed map, revealing a concealed safe behind it. Inside rested a sealed document. He placed it before Damian.
«Because thirty years ago, your grandfather and Carlo Moretti signed an agreement.»
Damian opened it and read the first paragraph. His expression shifted instantly. «If a legitimate descendant is born carrying both bloodlines…»
Antonio nodded. «That child inherits control of the assets both families hid before the war.»
Luca stared at him. «How much?»
Antonio answered quietly, «Ports. Property. Accounts. Companies. Nearly eleven billion dollars.»
Sofia pulled Rosie closer. Damian looked down at the little girl playing with her stuffed rabbit, completely unaware that people had killed for a fraction of what legally belonged to her.
Damian’s voice turned dangerously calm. «And Vivienne needs Rosie dead.»
Antonio shook his head. «No.»
Damian looked at him, and Antonio’s next words made his blood run cold. «She needs Rosie alive.»
«Why?»
«Because she cannot claim the inheritance without the child.»
Damian immediately saw the grand scheme. «She planned to marry me, then become Rosie’s legal guardian after Sofia and Luca disappeared permanently.»
Luca’s face hardened. «And Damian?»
«He would have died shortly after the wedding.»
A House of Cards
Thunder shook the mansion overhead. Damian closed the document. «Where is Vivienne now?»
A guard appeared at the end of the corridor, breathing heavily. «Boss.»
Damian turned. «The dining room is empty.»
«What?»
«All thirty-two guests are gone.»
Antonio’s expression darkened. «That’s impossible.»
The guard shook his head. «They left through the service tunnels.»
Damian immediately looked at Sofia. «Vivienne?»
The guard’s face went pale. «We found her dress.»
«Her dress?»
«She changed clothes.»
Damian’s eyes narrowed. «And Marcus?»
«Gone.»
Then Rosie lifted her head from Sofia’s shoulder. «Mommy?»
«Yes, baby?»
«The lady already knows about the basement.»
Every adult turned toward her. Sofia’s face paled. «What do you mean?»
Rosie pointed toward the far wall. «She came here before.»
Damian crouched down. «When?»
«When Mommy was sleeping.» Rosie thought for a moment. «She talked to Grandpa Tony.»
Antonio froze. Damian slowly stood, his eyes locking onto his father. Nobody spoke.
Rosie continued innocently, «She called him partner.»
Luca stared at Antonio. Sofia stepped backward. Damian raised his gun. «Father.»
Antonio did not move. Damian’s voice was barely a whisper. «Tell me why my three-year-old niece thinks Vivienne is your partner.»
Antonio looked around the room, then smiled—not warmly, not like a grandfather, but like the man who had ruled the Vale family before Damian ever touched the throne.
«I was wondering when the child would remember that.»
Somewhere above them, the mansion alarms began to scream.
